Each project is different and any one of them can be at different phases when I join. They may also already have some documentation or other members of the team may work on some of the documentation (like a Business Analyst would work on Business Requirements or Functional Specifications).

Step 1: Discovery

Successful engagements always involve clear communication and a deep understanding of the client’s business situation. I start off with listening to you. I listen for your business needs and desires in the project. Then I study your customers and competitors, paying special attention not only to what they say, but what they do and where they click. I am a passionate observer of how real-life users interact with products and websites. This step may involve any of the following:

  • Heuristic Audit
  • Competitive Analysis
  • Content Audit
  • Card Sorting
  • Stakeholder/Customer Interviews
  • User Personas & Scenarios

Step 2: Planning & Design

Most likely your project has many important business goals, with various levels of priority and difficulty. With a background in Business Analysis, I have played a part of central planning and product definition hub for some of the largest and most complex projects online. I’ll carefully study your technical and content constraints, and help you rank everything into an actionable roadmap that can drive the design process.

In this phase, solutions come into view. In essence, I combine a detailed understanding of your customers and start solving their problems in a way that leverages the strengths of your business. I will continue to discover fresh solutions. The best answers are not always what we expected them to be. This step may involve any of the following:

  • Site Map
  • Business Requirements
  • Wireframes & Annotations
  • User Testing
  • Functional Specifications
  • Rapid Prototyping
  • User Flows

Step 3: Build

Depending on the client’s level of technical expertise, resources, and needs, my involvement in development can be minimal or comprehensive. In all cases, I will deliver clear documentation and will continue to to provide ongoing support for development, if needed. This step may involve any of the following:

  • Client Side Development
  • Support for Development
  • User Testing
  • Product Review

Step 4: Measure & Optimize

Whenever possible working with the client to test, measure, and optimize product launch is ideal. This step may involve any of the following:

  • A/B Testing
  • Analytics Configuration
  • Data Analysis
  • Future Planning
